Post 11 Making rooms feel larger

Have you ever wanted more space but can’t move the walls? The following tips will make the room FEEL larger.

  • Clear all clutter – Less is more
  • Remove all unnecessary furniture
  • Opt for a simple scheme
  • Paint walls in soft pastel, cream, taupe or any of a wide range of whites
  • Skirtings, architraves and window surrounds can be painted the same colour as the walls using gloss enamel. A contrast is sensed when the walls are a low sheen finish
  • If another room opens directly off the space e.g. a sunporch, continue the colour through
  • Select blinds or curtains in similar tones to give a feeling of extension the wall
  • Keep them clear of the glazing during the day. Natural light makes the room feel more generous
  • Arrange large pieces of furniture in line with the walls. Items on an angle appear to take more space
  • Two sofas take up less floorspace than single lounge chairs for the same number of seats
  • Built-in furniture painted the same colour as the walls is less noticable
  •  Mirror doubles the space. Position it carefully so it reflects nature (garden or sky) or something you enjoy seeing
  • Keep flooring simple. Rugs, mats and different colours make the area appear smaller
  • Glass and reflective surfaces add sparkle and lightness

And have fun creating spaces that reflect your joy for life.

Thank you,
