Curtains – lined

Lined curtains fall better, look more attractive, are healthier and last longer. Custom-made drapes allow us to choose the most appropriate lining; blackout, noise reduction, thermal, poly-cotton or other less well known linings. In cooler areas it may be practical to include an interlining called bumph. This is a thick layer placed between the face fabric and the lining. As it’s possible to lose up to 25% of heat through glazing, the right window covering is essential.
We suggest closing curtains early to retain warmth. It’s also wise to extend the track at least 20 cm beyond the window. If viable select full length curtains; these will reduce the risk of drafts. The maximum dimension for a ready-made is a finished drop of 2.2m. The greatest width is 3.6m. Generally anything beyond this will require a custom-made product.

The most common header is a pencil pleat as it can be adjusted to fit windows perfectly. This works in your favour if you later decide to move your drapes into another room.

When choosing a colour for your new curtains, take samples of your carpet, wallpaper, paint and photos of art and key pieces in the room. If the background fabric colour is similar to the wall the space will feel more generous. Where there’s a contrast between the curtains and walls then the space may feel “chopped up” and smaller.

Window treatments are a large part of the interiors budget so if you don’t feel confident please employ a professional.
