Blinds

“What sort of blinds are best in a new house” I was asked, and my answer is “It depends. Where is the blind going? What’s its purpose? Would you prefer a roller, Venetian, vertical or Roman and do you know the difference?”

Rollers:
Usually found fitted inside the frame they can be either a sunscreen product or blackout. Sunscreens are left down and you can see outside but not in, during the day. Blackouts are used to keep the light from entering the room day or night; they are rolled up when not in use.

Venetians:
Horizontal slats are tilted to control the light. They can be adjusted so you can see out but others cannot see in. They’re made of metal, wood, plastic or composite materials and they’re also inside frame fitted. Venetians can be pulled up to increase natural light though it’s not recommended with a cheaper product.

Verticals:
These slats are also tilted to control the light. Initially cheap, they’re actually high maintenance as chains and weights often require replacement. Verticals can rattle and may be damaged by a playful animal.

Romans:
These are either inside or outside frame-fit. They can be made from a face fabric and lining of your choice. Or you can use an inside fit sheer voile for privacy. Roman Blinds are frequently found where it’s not practical to have a curtain.

I’ve mentioned the most popular blinds. They’re normally operated manually though if rough treatment is possible a Remote Control will give your blind a longer life.

Please do your own research on products available. Blinds are a big investment so get a couple of professionals to explain the advantages/disadvantages of their products. And don’t get blinded by the sales patter!

Thank you,
Betty
