Be kind to your garden

I was wandering around a mega store when a man asked me what weedkiller I’d recommend.

I was taken aback as I wasn’t wearing orange and black, however I laughed and said “You’re asking the wrong person as I’m an all natural gal myself.” He explained that he’d recently made a raised vegetable garden and the weeds were everywhere. “Well” I replied “I pull them out by hand or use salt and boiling water, if that’s any help?” He then turned to a passing man wearing the right colours and asked him what he’d suggest. I didn”t hear the reply and went away wondering why anyone would want to put chemicals in the vegie patch because the flow-on effect is:  1. spray the garden with toxins and they go into the soil, 2. grow vegetables which absorb nutrients and chemicals from their environment, 3.  eat the plants and wonder why we’re unhealthy?

When I mentioned this lack-of-big-picture knowledge to a friend she suggested something fairly new to the market called Kiwicare, a Biogrow certified product for use in organic gardens. It’s composed of pine oil and fatty acids.

So if you really must use a weedkiller this may be the most environmentally friendly option.

Happy gardening,
